Ok so on this past Thursday it was Earth Day. How fun! Right? It’s a day for environmental things to really take the front and center stage, for everyone to pretend they’re all environmentally conscious and act like they care. That’s the way it works. Too bad it’s all a hoax. People are so pathetic; we look for any excuse to pretend we care about something just for a little bit. You know just long enough for people to get the impression that we just might care, but short enough that heaven forbid we actually do something that would involve changing the way we live our lives. My god is it that hard to like recycle or something people. Honestly I think now, but hey that’s just my personal opinion.
Ok enough of my ranting, that’s not what this blog is about. It’s about the Earth, which I really do care about unlike some people. So let me inform you a little about Earth Day.
Now Earth day is April 22 every year and it has been this way for many years. How many exactly? Well to be exact Earth Day began on April 22, 1970 and was founded by Gaylord Nelson. The original intent for the is National Holiday now known as Earth Day was a teach-in. During this time Nelson had set up numerous teach-ins involving the Vietnam War and he now wanted to show that politician did also have an environmental conscious agenda too. He proposed that the teach-in happen on the campus of all US Universities (you know what I just realized? I don’t exactly know what a teach-in is. I imagine it to be something like a seminar or something, a bunch of people who may or may not care, gathering together to listen to some old hippie talk about the earth and how trees have feelings too).
So that’s how Earth Day got its start. I won’t lie, I’m surprised it’s lasted this long, but of course it will be around a while yet. We have just really began to enter a truly let’s pretend we’re all environmentally conscious stage.

Simplified Guide to Hybrid Cars
In my last post I discussed petroleum and established that a large percent of our petroleum goes into gasoline for our vehicles. Now hopefully your common sense if kicking in here and you’re realizing that all these vehicles are making quite an impact on this issue of global warming (and even if we decide there is still no such thing as global warming this is still making a negative impact on the environment). So the question now is- What do we do about this? And the answerer seems to be A) stop driving and use alternative means of transportation (this is not likely to happen in today’s society) or B) the all new idea of this magical thing called a hybrid car.
Now if you’re anything like me (which I’m sure there is a large percent of the population that is) you know little to nothing about cars. I am a teenage girl in today’s world. My main area of interest is am I having a good hair day, how do these jeans make my butt look, and yes of course a lot of my focus goes into this wonderful blog because yes I do have an original intelligent thought in my head on occasion. So with this said, I know nothing about cars. I have people around me to take care of that ( my father tells me I better marry a real man because ill need someone to change my oil and light bulbs for me when I get older, guess he’s kinda right in that sense). Now if I know nothing of cars how do I go about (or even really care about) getting an environmentally friendly car?
This is the point of my post today- the basic functions of a hybrid car and why I want one.
1) What does hybrid even mean? Any vehicle that combines two or more sources of power that can directly or indirectly provide propulsion power is a hybrid. From the little research I’ve done so far I’m finding that most hybrid cars seem to go on a combination of electricity and gasoline.
2) What’s the point of all these new technology just for some car? It’s simple really, to reduce tailpipe emissions and to improve mileage.
3) Are there different types of Hybrids? Yes there are. The two basics are Parallel Hybrid and Series Hybrid
“The first, known as a parallel hybrid, has a fuel tank that supplies gasoline to the engine and a set of batteries that supplies power to the electric motor.”
“In the Series Hybrid the gasoline engine turns a generator, and the generator can either charge the batteries or power an electric motor that drives the transmission. Thus, the gasoline engine never directly powers the vehicle.”
4) Is there a major price difference between Hybrids and Conventional cars? Now because Hybrids are a newer technology they do run a bit more expensive than there gas guzzling relatives, generally for a brand new car anywhere from $2000 to $10,000 more. However the idea behind this that in a few years you’ll earn that money back in the gas that you won’t have to continue to buy. Now I’ll admit I have not done enough research to guarantee that this will hold true but I honestly believe that sometimes it worth it to go the extra mile (no pun intended there) to do a little good for the earth.
Ok so in my book this is all that really matters. If you go anymore in depth with cars you tend to lose mean my goal here is to dumb things down, meaning if I don’t understand it, I’m probably not gonna try to explain it to you. There is really only one other question I can think of that would every really cross my mind, which is…
5) Are Hybrid cars decent looking (because I mean come on, nobody wants to drive around in some clunky granny looking car)? In my research I have found quite a few very decent looking Hybrid cars. I now know that I would quite like to drive a Toyota Highlander. I think it looks quite nice and hey it’s better for the environment.
I hope I’ve encouraged you to consider looking into investing in a hybrid car next time you find yourself strolling through the car dealership parking lot. In you want to do a little of your own research I would suggest the website http://www.howstuffworks.com/hybrid-car.htm

Lets Talk Petroleum
Today I want to have a little chat about Petroleum. Petroleum or, crude oil as it is also known as, is the stuff we use to make all kinds of stuff with. Like anything from make up to shoe polish to care battery casings and yes, of course, we also make that oh so important Gasoline with petroleum. So it’s obvious that we need petroleum, and lots of it. Now to obtain this we have to drill way down into the ground to where the nasty old remains of dead prehistoric animals have oozified (yes I just made that a word, so don’t even start with me) and turned into precious black goo. Now any well educated elementary school child can tell you- this means petroleum is a fossil fuel, which also means it is nonrenewable, therefore meaning we have only a limited amount and this all breaks down to the fact no one really wants to think about- We will run out of petroleum one day. What do we do then? Well let me just tell you what we’ll do then. We will have to just get over it and find a new way to make pretty much everything we deem a necessity in life if we want to continue to live.
Now as to what we are going to find to substitute for petroleum is a very vast and confusing topic and will require a blog post all of its own, so I’ll talk about that another day
Alright so the way that petroleum is sold is in large 42 gallon barrels. From one of these barrels we can get an average of 44 gallons of gasoline, which ok sounds like a good amount of gasoline, but if you really think about it it’s not that much. The average car holds about 15 gallons of gas (on average that is, some SUVs have 20-30 gallon tanks so). Now considering this that amount of gas keep my car going for 2 weeks if I drove strictly where I had to go and nowhere else. That would really be stretching it because I mean come on, I do have a life here, places to go, people to see. Hey maybe I’ll just get lost and drive around Seymour for an hour and half and waste over a quarter of a tank of gas. See what I mean.
So now that I’ve shown you how much gas a normal person goes through just driving around to keep living, I’m going to tell you how much a nation uses a day.
# 1 United States:
20,680,000 bbl/day 2007
# 3 China:
7,578,000 bbl/day 2007
# 4 Japan:
5,007,000 bbl/day 2007
# 5 Russia:
2,858,000 bbl/day 2007
Now this is just the top 5 consumers of Petroleum each day. As you can see the US is right there at the top (as always). We use over double of what China, who as you can see is in 2nd place here, uses every day. Twenty million, Six hundred and eighty thousand barrels of Petroleum A DAY. DING DING DING this should be sounding an alarm in some bodies head. That is a heck of a lot of oil for us to be using here. I’m sorry but is it now evident that we are exceptionally wasteful people here in America.
We have becomes so ridiculously dependent on a substance that we will soon run out of one day. What are we going to do then, because I know we sure aren’t going to go back to living like cavemen. Compared to other countries our petroleum usage is ridiculous and we need to slow it down here real soon. Dang cut back on your driving here people: car pool, walk, run, ride a bike, something, anything.

Today I want to talk about a book I’m in the process of reading for the 2nd time (that is I started it before and never finished so I plan on finishing it this time). It’s called Three Cups of Tea. “One man’s mission to promote peace… One school at a time.” That is the quote on the cover of the book. Once again as I make my way through the pages of this simply awe inspiring book I am honestly shocked at how little I know about the rest of the outside world, and of the little I do know, how much of that I just didn’t fully comprehend. Not that I can honestly comprehend it all now because I haven’t experienced this but it’s definitely a book that makes me want to run out an save the world, you know?
Any way, the point I’m trying to make is this book is about Greg Mortenson and his journey to provide education in Pakistan and Afghanistan. As I made my way through the first few chapters I was genuinely amazed at how many things I truly take for granted here. But the main one I’m going to focus on right now (as considering what this book is about after all) is school.
I generally enjoy school for the most part but sometimes its like torture. The whole getting up early and being told to do seemingly stupid pointless things such as write research papers on old books few people have ever heard of or learning how to use a unit circle in pre-cal( I mean come on do I need to know how to use a unit circle to do grocery shopping? I think not). But for everything at school that I find pointless there are many others that I know I should take advantage of. One of these things I realize now is my many amazing teachers (and even those not so amazing teachers that I come across on occasion).
“Mortenson was appalled to see 82 children, 78 boys and 4 girls who had the pluck to join then, knelling on the frosty ground, in the open. Haji Ali, avoiding Mortenson’s eyes, said the village had no school, and the Pakistani government didn’t provide a teacher. A teacher cost the equivalent of $1 a day, he explained, which was more then the village could afford. So they shared a teacher with a neighboring village, and he taught in Korphe 3 days a week. The rest of the time the children were left alone to do their studies.” – Three Cups of Tea
Can you imagine that? First off having to sit outside in the cold to have class. We complain if our rooms are too hot or cold. Second, not having a teacher. Maybe there are a few very mature responsible kids who could do this but remember when you we in like 3rd grade? Can you imagine a bunch of 8 and 9 year old little kids sitting a studying quietly by themselves? No of course not because here in America we are spoiled and not capable of this.
I just think that it is important for us to realize all of the things that we are taking advantage of here in our country. Education is extremly important, without it we really have no future.

Let's Talk Beef
Random Fact of the day: "Livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together."
That figure comes from no less authority than the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Ha-ha anybody who knows me is moaning and complaining already because they know where I’m going with this. I don’t eat red meat (which for anyone who doesn’t know beef is considered red meat). Now there are 3 main reasons for this odd little quirk of mine.
1) The Beef Industry (which includes the actual cows with all the space and other resources they take up, the machinery used when taking care of cows and butchering these innocent creatures, and then shipping all this beef all over the place to be eaten) is not healthy for the Environment.
2) Beef is not really healthy for you either (I don’t care how good you claim it tastes). It makes you fat, gives you high cholesterol, and so on. If you keep eating beef like you are now you’re more likely to have a heart attack later.
3) I got bored one day and decided to work on this whole concept of will power, so I decided to deny myself something I enjoy t see if I could do it (originally I gave up all meat but my mother claimed I was going to starve to death because I don’t eat enough vegetables as it is and I do really enjoy chicken so I decided to just give you the red meat part).
Now reason three is my own personal decision and I really don’t think it will pursued you to give you red meat so I won’t explain that anymore and reason two is more of a health aspect which I may touch on later (because believe it or not fat people affect our environment too) but it’s not really relevant as of now because I’m talking about wasted resources right now not health care (but believe me I have an opinion on that too).
Now environmentally speaking today our world produces massive amount of grain yearly, like enough grain to feed 6 billion people a sufficient vegetarian diet, yet we are using nearly one third of this grain to feed livestock. Now of all the grain produced in the US alone nearly 75% of this goes to feeding live stock. So broken down a bit more if we took all the grain feed to just cattle then we could feed 800 million people. Which is a colossal number considering that every year 15 million children die of hunger (that’s just children, meaning I’m not including all the adults that also die every year of hunger too).
Ok so now you know that our own food source is eating more than we do let me tell you a few more facts. Our population is rising. It has been for a while and it seems to be a major concern that we may not have enough land here soon. So while were worried about where our grandchildren will be living cows are taking up nearly 25% of are available land….. And remember all that grain they consume? Well that grain has to be grown somewhere. So not only is livestock eating our food, they take up our living space, and waste even more land because we have grow excessive amounts of grain. And as anyone know all this farming just strips the land of all of its nutrients.
So all in all livestock is eating our food, taking our living land and stripping away our farm land. Which if you think about it really this is a negative feedback loop. Cows need grain, to get grain we need fertile land but the grain strips fertile land so before long there will be no more fertile land so there will be no more cows and then there will be now cows or grain and we shall all starve to death.
See this is the cost of the hamburger you had for dinner last night.
I’m sorry but this to me is just ridiculous. Does it really make that much sense to spend so much of our time and valuable resources to invest it into some farm animals, when our own people are right in front of us starving to death?

Random sidenote
Alright so when I first had this idea for a blog I never realized it would be this complicated, I mean really the idea was just to pretty much document my thoughts on the subject. I guess I never really realized how screwed up my thought process really is. I tend to go in a million different directions at once and really in this subject it like a food web kinda thing, because one thing affects another and they all tie back in together so it’s really hard to go in one direction and stay there.
Now having said this I meant to touch on one subject at a time and fully explain it in each blog post but my first two real entries pretty much became a continuation of one another, which is ok I guess but they also kinda got a little more scientific then I had originally intended, which again is alright but I will probably try to avoid this situation in the future.
Ok, ok, ok- now that I feel like I’ve explained myself here (not that I really need to explain myself or anything, I mean this is my blog after all, I can right how every I want to but anyway) For the next few post I’ll probably just touch on some general different topic having to do with our environment. It’ll probably be way random because that’s how I’m feeling lately and it’s all about how I’m feeling lately because I’m feeling pretty selfish lately (see what I mean when I say everything kinda circles back to itself, oh and I’m really not all that selfish or anything but like all people I do have my moments).

Ice Age (just like the movie minus the talking animals)
Random Fact of the day: Some scientist are fearing the coming of another ice age in the next 100 years
Alright let me start of by saying- there is NOTHING wrong with using Wikipedia. I mean I know we’ve all be told by our oh so wonderful English teachers “Don’t use Wikipedia”, like it’s the devil or something. But I mean come on seriously, it is a perfectly acceptable website to use. Now granted you shouldn’t take everything for face value on there but you really shouldn’t do that anywhere, on any website. Let me teach you a very valuable lesson here. ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS use more than one site to double check your facts. You can never get the full story from one source. It’s just not possible.
Ok, now that’s out of the way let’s talk about Ice Ages. Whose seen that cute little cartoon movie about the ice ages with those cute little talking prehistoric animal? Everyone, right? If not then you need to get out from underneath that rock you living under and go see it. Now just image the landscape in that movie, then subtracts all the cute little talking animals and there you have it- an ice age.
By definition (and yes I did pull this exact wording from Wikipedia, but it did line up with all other definitions I found too, so stop your worrying) an ice age or more precisely, "glacial age" denotes a geological period of long-term reduction in the temperature of the Earth's surface and atmosphere, resulting in an expansion of continental ice sheets, polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers. An ice age is a natural system.
Did you catch that? Let me say it again just in case. An ice age is a natural system. Our earth goes through phases. We have documented numerous occasions in which the earth’s temp. has dropped excessive amounts and slipped into what we have named “the ice age”. Now let me point out that yes our earth has had times when it becomes excessively cold. But after each of these instances the earth has also warmed up afterwards. So is it possible that this warm period is simply another cycle that our big ball of life is going through?
In my research I have recently learned that many scientists believe that we are now living in what is call an interglacial period. Interglacial is the warm period between long ice ages. So if I understand this correctly we are right in understanding that there many freezing period in our earth’s history but also after each of these cold periods there was a warm period to back it up. Therefore at this moment in time I am concluding that our earth is simple going through another cycle right now. Now please understand this is just the general basic outline of what I am thinking as of now. This is a much deeper, complex scientific issue that needs more than a 2 sentence conclusion but like most of you, I am only capable of this simple conclusion right now because I still have a limited knowledge on this. This is something that has defiantly spiked my interest and I will be researching further. I mean to think that there are so many people out there stressing that we are killing our earth and the temperatures are rising so rapidly and we may all die soon when in fact we could possibly be coming up on another ice age where we could all freeze to death.
This is certainly a new piece of information that needs to be persued before forming a solid opinion on our global warming position and I encourage all people to do a little research themselves because this is something we should all understand. Yes we do effect our planet with our actions but is it possible that earth still goes through its cycles regardless of our actions?
Alright let me start of by saying- there is NOTHING wrong with using Wikipedia.
